FINAL GROUP PROJECT
Synopsis:
Our project took the form of a rap music video featuring a man who lost his girlfriend. He is reminded of her when he sees a sandwich that looked like the ones she used for make him. While the sandwich symbolizes love, it also brings forth feelings of hate and anguish, which are expressed throughout the man’s music video rant.
Notice What you Notice- Within the video is embedded a variety of whimsical creatures. During several of the scenes, all of the elements of a typical rap video will be featured, but in the background there is often something out of place. This includes: a guy with bunny ears, two dancers dressed in imaginary costumes, and several unusual features within his flashback memories.
Catalogue:
Art of Seeing – these elements are found throughout the video and are in the form of typical things one would see in a rap music video, such as a “hype man”, women dancing inappropriately, improperly worn clothing, as well as certain locational filming paralleling that of rap music videos.
Point of View- the point of view facet was emphasized through the means of filming and editing. There are no lyrics to the song, or words spoken in the video, and the film is in black and white. This was done in order to try and mimic old silent films, but still having a modern twist.
Metaphor- the metaphor within the video is the music society’s change in taste and how music today has become about objectifying women, and forming lyrics that most of the time don’t even make sense. By having an instrumental playing, but no lyrics heard despite the man’s lips moving, as well as women dancing on tables, we communicated that most music today, specifically rap, has just become nonsense. Further, there is also a metaphorical relationship between the music video and the rapper’s lost relationship. He uses the video to convey his painful recollections of the girl he used to love, and at the end it catches up with him when she reappears and crushes his heart once again.
Double-Entendre- The peanut butter and jelly sandwich itself serves as a double entendre. It is a physical sandwich that he carries through the video, but the same time it is also a physical embodiment of his relationship. When it is stepped on at the end of the video, the sandwich is physically destroyed, and the relationship is also symbolically demolished.
Life and Death- The life and death within the film begin with the sandwich being made, which as mentioned symbolizes the past relationship. The man carries the sandwich throughout the entire film as he reminisces about his lost love and of all the great times they had together. But at the end it is snatched from him and destroyed, which symbolizes the ultimate end, or death, of their relationship and the time for him to move onwards.
Multiple Frames- the multiple frames, while not pictures, are the events occurring throughout the video. We are telling a story by having the man notice something that reminds him of past memories and love, then having him rant about it and how much he misses the good and bad, and finally we take that from him to symbolize the time for him to let go and move on.
Framing the Image- the sandwich is present throughout the entire video and is carried by the man who sees it as a reminded of the past. The video begins with the sandwich being made, and ends with it being destroyed.
Symbol- the sandwich represents love and past memories.
Sound/Audio- the project was done via a video camera and then edited with sound, placing music allows the video to flow like a typical rap video, except he conveys his feelings through physical expressions instead of words.
Process:
First we came up with an idea of making a music video. We decided to make the music video about a guy seeing something that reminds him of his ex-girlfriend. Then we decided on how to implement the themes into our music video. Once we figured that out, we then filmed a scene in stadium and decided to think of other areas to film. We decided to come back the next week with weird props and film again on campus. Next we filmed by the pool, the river, and other locations on campus. Then we had to edit the video and add some music for the background. Once we were able to edit the video properly, we viewed it one last time and decided it was finish.

This image depicts an average weight girl looking in a mirror. When she looks in the mirror she sees someone who is extremely overweight. If someone else were to look at her, they would see someone who is healthy and clearly not over weight. This image depicts the struggle of body image in girls today.

ELEMENTS OF ART ASSIGNMENT

Harmony:
- -The tile floor in North Walker hall has many repeating lines and shapes. It has repeating squares and lines going up, down, left, and right.
- -The texture of little holes in the celling repeats itself.
- -Even though the shapes repeat, the tone of color of the tiles changes.
- - The bleachers in the soccer field are the same on both sides, but both are facing in towards the center of balance in the middle of the field. The nets on both sides of the field are both facing inwards too towards the center of balance.
- -Shapes of equipment used for this sport include a circle, half circle, rectangle pads, oval shaped cleats.
- - Schools choose their two colors based on if they look good together, usually one hot and one cold color that balance each other out.
- -The stair case in plant hall is very symmetrical and balances out very well on both sides.
Emphasis:
- -At my Grandmothers house, the point of focus is on a large fake tree that is right in our main entrance once you walk in the front door. It’s the first thing everyone notices when they walk into the house because there is nothing else around it so the eye is drawn to it automatically.
- - In my bedroom, the point of focus is a colored tapestry I have hanging on the wall directly in front of you when standing in my doorway. You notice it first all because of its large size, and vibrant colors of blue, red and orange.
Texture:
- -The celling in my room has a bumpy and rough texture with patterns of swirls alternating with crevices throughout.
- -The wooden floor has a glossy, waxed and smooth texture while the carpet has more of a soft fabric like texture with very small bumps.
- -The texture of the tree bark is rough compared to the flowers, but the blades of grass have a sharp texture if brushed on top. The petals on the plants have a leather like texture.
Variety:
- - Taken in Brevard Hall, this picture depicts an arrangement of bendy straws
- The arrangement of straws presents a variety of colors
- The varying shapes of the straws (particularly their bends) presents several different levels and figures
-
Movement:
- Taken in the Carol Morsani Hall, this picture depicts a lighting arrangement in the dining area
- The swirling arrangement of the lights creates a line that creates the illusion of movement
- Because of the curving nature of the arrangement, these lights create wavy movement
Proportion:
- Taken in Downtown tampa, this picture shows a series of pine trees in a small inner city park
- The uniformity of the trees creates relative proportion and visual comparison
- Though they are almost completely uniform in reality, the point of view creates varying proportions
Rhythm:
- This is a crosswalk in downtown Tampa, because it is in the proximity of the library, I believe the shapes to be books
- The eye follows the path and the patterns that the designs create
-The repeating shapes are laid out to follow the direction and flow of the crosswalk
Unity:
-Taken in Brevard Hall, this is the wall of a friend's dorm room showing the light fixture and decorative seashell strand
-The uniformity of the two decorative strands work harmoniously to create a single fixture
Color:
The colors in the picture are of a warmer tone. These secondary colors paired with the water in the background create a calmer and more relaxing atmosphere. This atmosphere would be drastically different and rather dull if the pop of colors were extracted.
Lines
This image depicts lines. The width and the height of the sky scrapers are all structured with a linear pattern.
Shape:
There are several identifiable shapes in the photograph. The building itself is made up of rectangles. The path is also made of square shaped concrete tiles to create a round shaped path.
Space:
The water demonstrates the space between the greenery and the buildings. The sky also serves as another element of space in this photograph.
